Stitch Guide

Follow me

There are a lot of books and websites that give quite detailed guides to both basic and special stitches with picture of every step for people who want to learn the stitches. The aim with this guide is to remind people who already know them in case the stitch is needed for one of my patterns, but it should be possible to learn stitches directly from the guide too.

Basic stitches UK terms

Chain (ch): Yarn over hook and pull though.

Slip-stitch (ss): insert hook through stitch or gap, yarn over hook, pull through stitch and loop.

Double crochet (dc): insert hook through stitch or gap, yarn over hook, pull through stitch (2 loops on hook), yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops.

Half treble crochet (htr): yarn over hook, insert hook through stitch or gap, yarn over hook, pull through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook, pull through three loops.

Treble crochet (tr): yarn over hook, insert hook through stitch or gap, yarn over hook, pull through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook, pull through two loops, yarn over hook, pull through two loops.

Double treble crochet (dtr): yarn over hook x 2, insert hook through stitch or gap, yarn over hook, pull through stitch (4 loops on hook), yarn over hook, pull through two loops, yarn over hook, pull through two loops, yarn over hook, pull through two loops.

Turning chains: if you are making a flat piece in rows, going from side to side, you need to start each row with a turning chain. How many chains you do depends on the stitch you are continuing with (or the stitch it is intended to replace):

Double crochet: 1 chain

Half treble crochet: 2 chain

Treble crochet: 3 chain

Double treble crochet: 4 chain

Special stitches:

Picot: a picot is a series of chain stitches that are joined to form a loop by making a slip stitch (ss) to the first chain (ch). A picot can consist of anything from 3 chains and upwards, all formed into a loop by a ss to the first chain. To make a picot you chain the number of times indicated and make a ss to the first ch. E.g. with a ch7 picot you ch 7 and ss to the first ch to make a loop.

Tr3tog: (yarn over hook (yoh), insert hook through stitch, yoh, draw yarn through, yoh, draw yarn through 2 loops) 3 times, yoh, draw yarn through all 4 loops.

Tr5tog: (yarn over hook (yoh), insert hook through stitch, yoh, draw yarn through, yoh, draw yarn through 2 loops) 5 times, yoh, draw yarn through all 6 loops.

Beginning Tr5tog: ch 2, (yarn over hook (yoh), insert hook through stitch, yoh, draw yarn through, yoh, draw yarn through 2 loops) 4 times, yoh, draw yarn through all 5 loops.

Time to share a few more photos of the squares I made for a cushion for a friend… I do love this combination and might have to play with colours again soon. Pattern is on my blog. ‘Oh lovely spring, are all these flowers for our delight…?’ 🎵🎶🎵 Whatever their ultimate purpose, delightful they are! After the rain…. My website is now all tidied up and up to date and I wrote a blog post about my ‘Friends Around The World Blanket’ as well. You can find links to the patterns on my blog and guide to how I evened out the size differences. You can find it on Saraphir dot com… meta are still blocking me and I can’t find my way around their systems. 😕 You can also check out all the cals on @calcrochetalong I meant to do my work today…. But the cherry blossom is out! Happy Sunday everyone! Hope you’re having a lovely day wherever you are. I’ve spent the morning starting much needed tidying up of my website. This means going through all the posts and making sure all the links are up to date, my name is right and the format is the same. Happy Earth Day. ♥️ I loved these tapestries by @cindysherman at @arosartmuseum in Aarhus. Such incredible detail in the weaving and the thread is unbelievably thin… amazing skill by the weavers. A few more photos of my latest cushion cover…
