I’ve been working behind the scenes on some more snowflake patterns this year and the first one I’m ready to publish is this Starburst Sputnik Snowflake. It’s a development of my Starburst Snowflake that I made some years ago. I like making sets that fit together and I think this is a fun variation of the more elegant Starburst.

I make my snowflakes with a mixture of yarns (measurement of the Starburst Sputnik):
3- ply linen yarn (from Etsy) and a 2 mm hook. (Measurement: 12 cm or 4 3/4 inches across.)
2- ply linen yarn (from Etsy) and a 1.50 mm hook. (Measurement: 10 1/2 cm or approximately 4 1/4 inches across.)
4- ply linen yarn (from Etsy) and a 2.50 mm hook. (Measurement: 15 cm or 6 inches across.)
Scheepjes Sugar Rush, BonBon or Sweet Treat (cotton yarn) and a 1.75 mmm hook. (Measurement: 11 cm or approximately 4 1/2 inches across.)
I personally love the linen yarn. It is considered more eco-friendly in its manufacturing than cotton and it gives a much more rustic look. It is also naturally quite stiff, which is good when hanging snowflakes! Having said that I do stiffen my snowflakes with a mixture of PVA glue and water. It does roughen them a bit, but when making them for sale they really need to be hanging well. The cotton yarn has a better stitch definition, but doesn’t block or keep its shape as well in my experience.
You’ll find the pattern below in both UK and US terms. For abbreviations please see my page Crochet Terms. Please remember that this is my design and copyright. If you make to sell I would appreciate if you credit me as the designer and please do not copy or translate the pattern or present it as your own – thanks!
Special Stitch:
Picot: a picot is a series of chain stitches that are joined to form a loop by making a ss to the first chain. A picot can consist of anything from 3 chains and upwards, all formed into a loop by a ss to the first chain. In this pattern you’ll find 4-ch and 6-ch picots. E.g. with a 6-ch picot you ch 6 and ss to the first ch to make a loop.

I hope you enjoy making this pattern! I would love to see your versions of the Starburst Sputnik Snowflake, so you can tag me on Instagram or add it as a project on Ravelry. You can also send it to me on Facebook.
It takes me a long time to design these patterns and to write them out. I have decided to keep my site ad-free, so if you like my patterns I’d be very happy if you would consider making a small donation towards the cost:
I hope you have a good autumn/winter and happy making!
