The world has changed dramatically in the UK and many other countries in the last 3 weeks. COVID-19 and the national responses has confined most of us to our homes and no one knows how long the lockdowns will last. There is much advice online on how to stay well during this time, and crocheting and crafting has got to be high up on the list! I’m also using the time to finish projects I’ve had lying around for ages and not been able to finish as I was too busy with other work. First up is this Puffalicious Square.

As usual I made it with 3 different yarns in different weights and fibre mixtures. This ensures I know it works with anything. I made it with Drops Nepal (Aran weight) and a 5mm hook. With this yarn it measures 29-30 cm/ 11-12 inches across and you need 80 – 85 g of yarn. The DK weight yarn I used was KPC Glencoul DK. I used a 4 mm hook for this. You need 45 g of yarn for this and it measures 23 cm/ 9 inches across. The last yarn was Scheepjes Catona, which is a 4-ply yarn. I use a 3 mm hook for this. You need 35-38 g of yarn for this and it measures 21 cm / 8-9 inches across. As this is a pure cotton yarn it is less stretchy than the others and needs more blocking.

You will find the pattern for the Puffalicious Square below in UK and US terms. The beginning of each row is written out to start with a standing stitch as it is neater and in the end easier than starting with a turning chain. If you are not familiar with standing stitches, you can find a tutorial here. There is an option to not do this if you are working with the same colour (or prefer not to) and this option is given in brackets at the start of each row.

Puffalicious Square UK terms

Special Stitches:

Puff stitch: * yoh, insert hook through st or chsp, yoh, pull loop through * repeat from * to * 2 more times, you now have 7 loops on the hook, yoh, pull through all 7 loops.

Beginning puff stitch: make a slip knot and put on hook, now work the puff stitch in the same way as you would a standing stitch, holding on to the knot and first loop with your index finger, * yoh, insert hook through st or chsp, yoh, pull loop through * repeat from * to * 2 more times, you now have 7 loops on the hook, yoh, pull through all 7 loops.

If you’re using the same colour and continuing from a ss, you can make ch 1 and continue with the puff stitch as above.

V-stitch: (tr, ch 1, tr) in same stitch

Trible treble crochet (trtr): yarn over hook 3 times, insert through st, yoh, pull loop through, * yoh, pull yarn through 2 loops*, repeat from * to * 3 more times.

Pattern:

Foundation ring: ch 5, ss to 1^st ch to make ring.

Round 1: ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with ss to 1^st dc.

Round 2: ch 1, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in same st, * skip 1 st, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next st *, repeat from * to * 4 more times, skip 1 st, join with ss in top of 1^st puff st. (12 puff st, 6 ch2sp)

Round 3: (same colour: ss to next ch2sp, ch 1), standing dc in any ch2sp, 2 dc in same ch2sp, * 3 dc between next 2 puff sts, 3 dc in next ch2sp *, repeat from * to * 4 more times, 3 dc between next 2 puff sts, join ss to first dc/ss. (36 dc)

Round 4: (same colour: ss in next st, beg puff st), beg puff st in any st, * ch 2, skip 1 st, puff st in next st *, repeat from * to * 16 more times, ch 2, join with ss to top of beg puff st. (18 puff sts, 18 ch2sp)

Round 5: (same colour: ss to next ch2sp, ch 1), standing dc in any ch2sp, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same chsp, * 2 dc in each of the next 2 ch2sp, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch2sp *, repeat from * to * 4 more times, 2 dc in next 2 ch2sp, join with ss to first dc. (48 dc, 6 chsp)

Round 6: (same colour: ss to 1^st ss, ch 1, dc in next dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next chsp), standing dc in any chsp, (ch 1, dc) in same chsp, * skip next st, dc in next 7 sts, (dc, ch 1, dc) in chsp *, repeat from * to * 5 more times, omitting the last chsp, join with ss to first dc. (54 dc, 6 chsp)

Round 7: (Same colour: ss to next chsp), beg puff st in any chsp, (ch 2, puff st in same chsp), * skip 2 sts, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next st, skip 3 sts, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next st, skip 2 sts, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next chsp *, repeat from * to * 5 more times, omitting the last chsp, join with ss to beg puff st. (36 puff st, 18 ch2sp)

Round 8: (Same colour: ss to next ch2sp, ch 1), standing dc in any corner ch2sp, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch2sp, * (dc between next 2 puff sts, 2 dc in next ch2sp) twice, dc between next 2 puff sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch2sp *, repeat from * to * 5 more times, omitting the last ch2sp, join with ss to first dc. (66 dc, 6 ch2sp)

Round 9: (same colour: ss to next chsp, ch 3), standing tr in any ch2sp, (ch 1, tr) in same ch2sp, * skip next 2 sts, (tr, ch 1, tr) in next st, skip next 2 sts, (tr, ch 1, tr) in next st, skip 2 sts, (tr, ch 1, tr) in next st, skip next 2 sts, (tr, ch 1, tr) in next ch2sp, skip next 2 sts, (2 trtr, ch 2, 2 trtr) in next st, skip next 2 sts, (trtr, ch 1, dtr) in next st, skip next 2 sts, (dtr, ch 1, tr) in next st, skip next 2 sts, ch 1, dc in ch2sp, ch 1, skip next 2 sts, (tr, ch 1, dtr) in next st, skip next 2 sts, (dtr, ch 1, trtr) in next st, skip next 2 sts, (2 trtr, ch 2, 2 trtr) in next st, skip next 2 sts, (tr, ch 1, tr) in ch2sp *, repeat from * to * one more time, omitting the last ch2sp, join with ss to standing tr (or 3^rd ch of ch3), break yarn and fasten off.

Round 11: (same colour: ss to corner ch2sp, ch 1), standing dc in any ch2sp, (ch 2, dc) in same ch2sp, * dc in next 23 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch2sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last ch2sp the last time, join with ss to first dc. (25 dc, ch2spalong each side)

Round 12: (same colour: ss to corner ch2sp), beg puff in any ch2sp, (ch 3, puff st) in same ch2sp, * (ch 2, skip 2 sts, puff st in next st) 8 times, ch 2, skip 1 st, (puff st, ch 3, puff st) in next ch2sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last ch2sp, join with ss to beg puff st. (10 puff sts, ch3sp, 9 ch2sp along each side)

Round 13: (same colour: ss to corner ch3sp), beg puff in any ch3sp, (ch 3, puff st) in same ch3sp, * (ch 2, puff st in next ch2sp) 9 times, ch 2, (puff st, ch 3, puff st) in next ch3sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last ch3sp, join with ss to beg puff st. (11 puff sts, ch3sp, 10ch2sp along each side)

Round 14: (same colour: ss to corner ch3sp), beg puff in any ch3sp, (ch 3, puff st) in same ch3sp, * (ch 2, puff st in next ch2sp) 10 times, ch 2, (puff st, ch 3, puff st) in next ch3sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last ch3sp, join with ss to beg puff st. (12 puff sts, ch3sp, 11ch2sp along each side)

Round 15: (same colour: ss to corner ch3sp), standing dc in any ch3sp, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch3sp, * 3 dc in next 11 ch2sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch3sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last ch3sp, join with ss to first dc. (37 dc, ch2sp along each side)

Round 16: (same colour: ss to corner ch2sp, ch 3), standing tr in ch2sp, (ch 3, tr) in same ch2sp, * skip 1 st, tr in next st, (skip 1 st, V-st in next st, skip 1 st) 11 times, tr in next st, skip 1 st, (tr, ch 3, tr) in next ch2sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last ch2sp, join with ss to first tr. (4 tr,ch3sp+ 11 V-stitch along each side)

Round 17:(same colour: ss to corner ch3sp, ch 1), standing dc in ch3sp, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch3sp, * 1 dc in each st and chsp along the side, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch3sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last ch3sp, join with ss to first dc/ch. (41 dc along each side)

Round 18: (same colour: ss to corner ch2sp, ch 2), standing htr in ch2sp, (ch 2, htr) in same ch2sp, * htr in each st, (htr, ch 2, htr) in next ch2sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last ch2sp, join with ss to first htr/ch2. (43 htr, ch2sp along each side)

Puffalicious Square US terms

Special stitches:

Puff stitch: * yoh, insert hook through st or chsp, yoh, pull loop through * repeat from * to * 2 more times, you now have 7 loops on the hook, yoh, pull through all 7 loops.

If you’re using the same colour and continuing from a ss, you can make ch 1 and continue with the puff stitch as above.

V-stitch: (dc, ch 1, dc) in same stitch

Double treble crochet (dtr): yarn over hook 3 times, insert through st, yoh, pull loop through, * yoh, pull yarn through 2 loops*, repeat from * to * 3 more times.

Pattern:

Foundation ring: ch 5, ss to 1^st ch to make ring.

Round 1: ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join with ss to 1^st sc.

Round 6: (same colour: ss to 1^st ss, ch 1, sc in next sc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next chsp), standing sc in any chsp, (ch1, sc) in same chsp, * skip next st, sc in next 7 sts, (sc, ch 1, sc) in chsp *, repeat from * to * 5 more times, omitting the last chsp, join with ss to first sc. (54 sc, 6 ch1sp)

Round 8: (Same colour: ss to next ch2sp, ch 1), standing sc in any corner ch2sp, (sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in same ch2sp, * (sc between next 2 puff sts, 2 sc in next ch2sp) twice, sc between next 2 puff sts, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in next ch2sp *, repeat from * to * 5 more times, omitting the last ch2sp, join with ss to first sc. (66 sc, 6 ch2sp)
