I do love when designs come about as surprises. I was making up a pattern for someone at work so she could develop her crochet skills and decided on a mixture of granny and V stitches. As I was making it up I quite fancied making a cowl for myself and the Granny Victory Cowl was born. It is worked in the round and you can make it as wide or narrow as you wish – I really wish I finished my wide version before the beast from the east hit us here in Edinburgh! But at least it’s still cold and I’ll have some use of it! It’s my third cowl pattern made with chunky yarn, and a change from the herringbone theme of the Chunky Herringmesh Cowl and the Horisontal Herringmesh Cowl.
The cowls are made with Drops Andes – a chunky yarn in a 35% alpaca and 65% wool mix – and an 8 mm hook. I use it for winter accessories as it doesn’t have the same itchiness as pure wool yarns. I have made a narrow and a wider version of the Granny Victory Cowl. For the narrow version you need 210 g Andes (96 m per 100 g) and for the wider one 254 g. The narrow is 7 1/2 inches / 19 cm wide, the wider one 9 inches / 23 cm wide and they both have a 50 – 52 inch circumference. The pattern is below in both UK and US terms.
Please remember that this is my design and my copyright. You’re most welcome to use the pattern for yourself, but please do not copy, reproduce, translate or publish it as your own. If you sell what you make or post pictures of your makes I would appreciate if you mention where you got the pattern and direct people to my site. Thanks!

I hope you enjoy the pattern and wearing the cowl – I promise it will keep you warm and snug! I would love to see your versions of the Granny Victory Cowl, so you can tag me on Instagram or add it as a project on Ravelry. You can also send it to me on Facebook.
It takes me a long time to design these patterns and to write them out – and running a website is not free. I have decided to keep my site ad-free, so if you like my patterns I’d appreciate it if you would consider donating towards the cost:
Thank you!
