Some of you might remember that I back in 2016 took part in a CAL (crochet along) called ‘Friends Around The World’ (2016). I designed my first square, Sapphire Dream Square, for it and also decided to join the cal and crochet as many of the squares as I could to make my own Friends Around The World Blanket. I found it really rewarding to take part and I learned a lot about how other designers write out patterns and their approaches to designing. You can see my guide to some of the squares here.
I intended to make a blanket from the 20 squares I made, but they ended up in a box for a number of years. The main reason for this was I had moths in my flat and the squares were all made from 100% wool yarn (Drops Alaska), so it seemed best to wait till I move somewhere else before assembling the blanket. My plans to move got delayed indefinitely though, so this autumn/winter (2022) I decided to finally finish the blanket as the moth problem is reduced. As you can see from my other blog posts, I had to tweak some of the squares as they didn’t all have the same stitch count along each side and weren’t the same size. They still weren’t exactly the same, but I managed to join them all with an zipper join and make a border. Here are some photos of the blanket:

It was incredibly satisfactory to finally get it finished! I am definitely a starter rather than a finisher, and have a tendency to have too many projects going at the same time and only finish the small ones. But it was wonderful to get the chance to look back at a time when I had just started out as a designer – assembling it has definitely been a trip down memory lane! I hope you have a look at the squares, some of them are absolutely gorgeous!
