I decided that this autumn is the time to make more of my patterns available for free – especially the smaller ones – and the first one up is this small feathery snowflake. I make three sizes of this kind of snowflake and will be posting the pattern for the other two during October. I make my snowflakes from 3-ply linen yarn (2 mm hook), which makes the snowflakes stiffer and give them a lovely rustic look. I think they look a bit Scandinavian, but I suppose that’s quite appropriate with me being Danish! You can get this kind of yarn from several shops on Etsy, many of them from Lithuania. They would also work in 4-ply/ fingering cotton yarn – or even thinner yarn. When made with 3-ply linen yarn the snowflakes measure 9 cm from tip to tip.
You will need to block the snowflake after it’s made as it has a tendency to curl (at least it does with the yarn I use) and it may also be necessary to stiffen them. I use a mixture of PVA glue and water for this.
The pattern is written out below in both UK and US terms – you will find a guide to the abbreviations on my page Crochet Terms. You will notice that I in many places write e.g. ch 1, ch 5… This is not a mistake but is to draw your attention to there being 1 chain in between each loop/picot of the feather – I find it easier to keep count by thinking of them as separate stages of the feather.
You can now buy a PDF file with the pattern for this Small Feather Snowflake and my 11 other snowflake patterns in my Etsy shop or my Ravelry Store for a small sum. The file contains photo tutorials for some of the patterns and details of all special stitches needed.
Please remember that this is my design and my copyright – feel free to use them for yourself, but please do not claim, translate, or publish the pattern as yours. I’d appreciate it if you credit me as the designer if you post pictures or sell what you make online – thanks!
