Anybody else enjoying the warmer weather? It’s such a contrast to last year where we were dealing with the “Beast of the East” around this time and everything in Edinburgh came to a standstill for days. Giving the growing warmth it seems a bit late posting a pattern for hats, but the beauty of a blog is that they will still be there next year!
I made this pattern a couple of years ago, but as per usual life has been a bit too busy lately with new work and studying taking most of my time these days.

This pattern is a very cute knitted Baby Pixie Hat in three sizes – 0 – 3 months, 3 – 6 months and 6 – 12 months. They are made with Drops Nepal, which is an Aran weight yarn in a soft alpace and wool mix. I use 5 double pointed 5 mm needles for all of them. You need between 25 and 50 g of Drops Nepal yarn for the hats.
Please remember that this is my design and my copyright. You’re most welcome to use the pattern for yourself, but please do not copy, reproduce, translate or publish it as your own. If you sell what you make or post pictures of your makes I would appreciate if you mention where you got the pattern and direct people to my site. Thanks!
Baby Pixie Hat 0 – 3 month
- Cast on 56 stitches and divide evenly over the 4 needles.
- 6 rows rib stitch – 2 knit, 2 purl.
- 8 rows stocking stitch
- (knit 12, k2tog) x 4
- knit 1 row
- (knit 11, k2tog) x 4
- knit 1 row
- repeat the above pattern of decreasing until you have 8 sts left.
- Cut the yarn and thread it on a darning needle. Thread it through the 8 sts, take them off the needles and tighten the circle at the top. Thread through all stitches again and weave in the stitches at the back.
- Weave in the other ends.
- Make a pompom and attach it to the top of the hat, threading the yarn through the stitches on the top and pulling it really tight. If you want to make it really tight, you can thread the yarn back over the yarn holding the pompom together and back through the stitches. Weave in the ends.

The hats go very well with my crochet Noella Baby Booties, also made with Drops Nepal yarn. My other knitted hat patterns are the Children’s Bentie Beanie and the Adult Bentie Beanie. There will be more coming in the near future.
I hope you enjoy making this pattern! I would love to see your versions of the Baby Pixie Hat, so you can tag me on Instagram or add it as a project on Ravelry. You can also send it to me on Facebook.
It takes me a long time to design these patterns and to write them out. I have decided to keep my site ad-free, so if you like my patterns I’d be very happy if you would consider making a small donation towards the cost:
Happy making!

Can you knit this on round needles
Apologies for delay. Yes, if you know how to use them when you’re reducing the number of stitches it shouldn’t be a problem.
DROPS yarn is soooo good. Thank you for the pattern xx
I have a question about the pattern at the point where you start knitting 2 together. The rows before those are stocking stitch (so knit one row, purl one row, right?) But ones we start knitting together, do we stop purling every other row? The picture looks as if the stocking stitch goes the full way up the hat. Thank you!
Hi, Sorry I didn’t see your question. You’re right, you do stocking stitch all the way up, the pattern is written based on using circular needles where you knit all the time. Hope you’ve worked it out or it is not too late!
